Supporting Venezuelan Missions

Recently, a priest from our Archdiocese, Fr. Greg Schaffer visited Holy Spirit. Fr. Schaffer grew up in St. Paul and has served as a missionary in Venezuela (the diocese of Ciudad Guayana) for over 25 years. He and another priest serve a parish community of 60,000 members. The parish is exceedingly poor with very few resources. Food is scarce and many of the grocery stores are empty with no supplies coming in. One of the only ways to secure food is through the black market (which is very expensive). It could take up to 4 days wages to purchase enough chicken for one person. This is also an area of Venezuela where violence (beatings and killings) are a way of life.

Over the next week, we will be collecting donations of basic hygiene items such as:

  • Deodorant
  • Bar Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Sanitary Napkins (for women)
  • School Supplies

We will also be holding an out-of-uniform day on Thursday, May 10, to support the good work of Fr. Schaffer. It will be $1 to be out of uniform; $5 to be out of uniform and wear a hat.

Bishop Helizandro Teran, Bishop of the Diocese of Ciudad Guayana,
Venezuela and Fr. Schaffer will be here on May 14 to accept our donation and give a presentation to the kids.
