The ministry of the lector is to proclaim the Word of God in the first reading from the Old Testament and in the second reading from the New Testament. The lector also leads the Prayers of the Faithful, or petitions, at each liturgy.
Those who feel called to this ministry must have familiarity with the Bible, feel at ease with public speaking, and demonstrate an ability to use clear, effective, and expressive speech in a microphone. Each lector is given a workbook of all the readings for the liturgical year and is expected to practice so that readings flow and words are correctly pronounced.
A required training session will give lectors the opportunity to practice reading at the pulpit microphone. Lectors will be scheduled after attending the training.
